The Wrangell Police Department consists of sixteen personnel which include Sworn Officers, Dispatch/Correctional Officers and Reserve Officers. All Sworn Officers also hold Special Commissions as Alaska State Troopers and U.S. Customs. They routinely enforce State and Federal Laws in and out of the Wrangell area due to limited man-power in all agencies. Inter-agency cooperation is vital when working in these types of environments. As part of the Department's Community Oriented Policing philosophy, members of the Department strive to maintain positive relationships with the youth, adults, and elderly members of our community. Wrangell officers teach the DARE program and Hunter Safety/Firearms safety classes in the local schools. Officers participate in the annual bike rodeo where children's bikes are inspected for safety items and conditions and bicycle safety and rules of the road are taught to the participants. The Police Department coordinates and sponsors it's annual Youth Appreciation Fish Derby. The Derby consists of businesses, service organizations and citizens working together for a designated day of fishing, games, and a special awards ceremony for the participants. The Police Department maintains a fishing and camping gear locker for the community's youth to borrow throughout the year. By providing these activities and this gear, it is our hope and desire that our youth would seek substance free alternative recreational activities. Members of the Department regularly speak to citizen groups where their needs, personal safety, and business security issues are discussed. The
